Sunday Service: Glorious!

The Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga 84 South Service Road, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada

We are gathering in person this Sunday at 10:30am!  This Thanksgiving weekend we choose to celebrate the beauty and abundance of life, from pumpkins to music, even as the leaves fall away and the nights grow long. Don’t forget to donate to the Mississauga Food Bank! On this holiday weekend of thanksgiving treat yourself and your loved ones to a morning of togetherness at UCM, either in person or on-line. Sunday at 10:30am I will lift up the challenging art of happiness. How do we find joy in the midst of stress and uncertainty? Can we really just choose to be happy? In the spirit of the season, we have some thanksgiving treats to share: mini-gourds and pumpkins, as well as gift bags with questions to inspire good conversation. If you aren't able to come on Sunday but would like a gift bag, please contact Tisa by Friday at 1:00pm to request one to be mailed. Don't forget to register in advance for contact tracing purposes. Our safety protocols include: Limit to 60 attendees. Registration in advance. Attendees be fully vaccinated. Masks must be worn indoors. Chairs will be spaced into household groups. No congregational singing. We continue to ask people to be masked, stay physically distanced, and exit the building quickly. While you are welcome to hum along with the hymns, please do not sing aloud! There will come a time when we can make a joyful noise together, but not yet. Doors and windows will be opened, so dress for the weather. Thanksgiving Food Bank Collection at UCM

The Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga 84 South Service Road, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada

Thanksgiving is one of UCM 's three yearly collections for The Mississauga Food Bank. The food bank works with individual clients with healthy food and also distributes food to breakfast clubs, soup kitchens, after school programs, new immigrant centres and virtually anyone who is hungry in Mississauga. The need for the Mississauga Food Bank has risen in the past few years with the cost of healthy food also continuing to rise. Bring your food and monetary donations to our Sunday service on October 10. Cheques may be made out to "Mississauga Food Bank". To help our neighbours please donate generously. Donations can also be made through their website: https://www.themississaugafoodbank.org/. Thank you.

Gardening at UCM

The Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga 84 South Service Road, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada

Our native false sunflower, Heliopsis helianthoides and New England aster, Symphyotrichum novae-angliae in the berm (photo by C. Rempel) Gardening is good for your health I wish to thank last week's gardening volunteers for their efforts. Joan Ashdown, Joan Hill, Candice Rice, and John Rowell. Besides the benefit of caring for our property and getting your name in the Shining Chalice, you can also increase the feel-good hormones in your brain by gardening. According to a 2007 British study, breathing in the smell of dirt may lighten your mood as the bacteria increases serotonin levels. Here’s the link to the study: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0306452207001510 and here’s a link to an article that speaks to the positive mental health of gardening in general: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/docproject/digging-in-the-dirt-how-plants-heal-people-1.5979538/plants-bring-peace-to-gardeners-grappling-with-grief-depression-and-anxiety-1.5979545 To get some of those benefits, please join me this Sunday afternoon at 2 pm. Please email carmenrempel@gmail.com or call 647-897-6415 so I know whom to expect. Thank you, Carmen Rempel

Online Sunday Service – Guest Speaker: Anti-racism work as Spiritual Practice – Donovan Hayden

Online , Canada

This Sunday at 10:30am we can all enjoy the service from the comfort of homes, sipping coffee! This Sunday we warmly welcome Donovan Hayden, a life long Unitarian speaking on Anti-Racism as a Spiritual Practice. We will be on Zoom ONLY as Donovan shares his experiences as a Black activist, storyteller, and artist who has been working with UUs and anti-racism in both Canada and the US. Donovan grew up in the Neighbourhood congregation in Toronto. Summer 2020 was a moment of racial reckoning. However, with those months of intense activism behind us, those committed to social justice must ask "What do we do now?". As Unitarians, committed to this struggle, it is important that we continue to engage and support anti-racism work through spiritual practice. Donovan Hayden is a Black activist, storyteller, and artist. He recently finished a MA in Theatre & Performance Studies at York University. Donovan has had the opportunity to engage with Unitarians and anti-racism work in both Canada and the US. He blends activism and art for the goal of Black liberation and the dismantling of white supremacy. Beloved Conversations is a UU program that involves personal reflection and spiritual practices while learning to use an anti-racist approach to church. Last night I had the joy of a worship session that involved...
