In her award-winning sermon, “The Land of Enough,” the Rev. Cecelia Kingman says, “Communities of faith perform a singular function. They have what sociologists call an alternative imagination, an ability to posit a future different from, and better than, the present we know.” Here at UCM, we offer just such an alternative imagination, a mission we re-state each Sunday morning—to deepen the spirit, nurture community, and act for an equitable, sustainable world. As our Canvass draws to a close, we reflect on why we give to this community, and what this community gives to us. Rev. Rita preaching, with Service Associate Charlotte Ferworn.
Our theme for spiritual exploration activities this year is All Around the World in Mississauga: Cultures and Cuisines. We are continuing with recipes and spices from Hispanic and Latin American cuisine. Physical copies which will be available after service and the links to the recipes can be found in the Shining Chalice. Throughout the month, families are encouraged to try making the different recipes together and bring a favourite dish for the potluck after service.
You are invited to join our new yoga instructor, Claudette Beetles as she guides you through a gentle practice of exercises.

The great Unitarian religious educator the Rev. Sophia Lyon Fahs wrote “Each night a child is born is a holy night,” and she meant, too, that each and every child is a holy being. Join us this Sunday as Rev. Rita, Family Life Coordinator Caitlyn Seale, Service Associate Leslie Webb, and members of the Spiritual Exploration Team (Will Ramelheiro, Devin Kreuger, Sadaf Salman, and members of the Youth Group) organize a no-rehearsal pageant and hymn sing, with our blessed children and all young-at-heart bringing to life the story of Jesus’s birth in ways uniquely Unitarian and Universalist.
Junior youth (10-14) and youth (14-18) are invited to leave after the story for getting-to-know each other activities and spiritual exploration of various topics and themes.

Sunday morning is important to you. You know it is, because you keep showing up each week! There is always something for everyone—a familiar and comforting ritual; good words to inspire, inform, or provoke; beautiful music and the chance to make some with congregational singing; conversation and connection; coffee and cookies! Why not spread the joy of UCM and our Unitarian Universalist faith with family, friends, and neighbors. Bring them along, and let them know something about who you are and what moves you. Rev. Rita preaching.
We share a video, snacks, and conversation on the 3rd Sunday of each month.
The holiday season is not easy or joyful for all of us, especially if you are grieving, marking tragic anniversaries, struggling with personal situations, turned off by commercialism, or feeling lonely or alone. Join Rev. Rita time of quiet, soft music, and reflection.

Once again, the shortest day, winter solstice, comes, and we are reminded that the seasons of the earth and those of our lives move in cycles that provide hope in times that can feel bleak. As the darkest day comes, more light is poised to return. Change and transformation are a given. We will celebrate this day with the Bells of Norwich Sacred Circle Dance. Rev. Rita officiating, with Service Associate Tammy Christiansen and Dance Leader Ellen Newman.
In the words of the Rev. Steve Garnaas-Holmes, “The story of the Nativity of Christ is not just a lovely, starlit moment of precious magic and calm adoration. It's the story of God's subversion of the world, through no power at all except love.” Commemorating the birth of Jesus in the quiet of dusk reminds us of an abiding mystery—that love grows and even thrives in a harmful and hurting world. Join us for a service of traditional readings, new insights, and singing familiar songs. Rev. Rita officiating.
