Sunday Services – Reverent Pat – Joy as an Antidote

Great Hall

December 14: Joy as an Antidote Archbishop Desmond Tutu once said: "Discovering joy does not...save us from the inevitability of hardship and heartbreak. In fact, we may cry more easily, but we will laugh more easily too. Perhaps we are just more alive. Yet as we discover more joy, we can face suffering in a way that ennobles rather than embitters. We have hardship without becoming hard. We have heartbreak without being broken." Let us look at joy as an antidote to the bitterness and brokenness of this world. Join Guest Minister Rev. Pat Trudeau to explore this topic together.

Reverent Rita – Christmas Eve

December 24: Christmas Eve In the words of the Rev. Steve Garnaas-Holmes, “The story of the Nativity of Christ is not just a lovely, starlit moment of precious magic and calm adoration. It's the story of God's subversion of the world, through no power at all except love.” Commemorating the birth of Jesus in the quiet of dusk reminds us of an abiding mystery—that love grows and even thrives in a harmful and hurting world. Join us for a service of traditional readings, new insights, and familiar songs. Rev. Rita officiating, with Service Associate Rosana Salvaterra.

Sunday Services – Rev. Sally Fristche – Dr. King and the UUs

January 25—Dr. King and the UUs Rev Sally Fritsche, Minister Neighbourhood UU Congregation Unitarian Universalism came together as a merged denomination in 1961, the same year the first Freedom Rides bused through the American South, and just two years before Martin Luther King Jr's march on Washington and his much-quoted "I have a dream" speech. King's legacy is honoured each January, and today we will take the opportunity to reflect more deeply on where our tradition's unique story intersects with that of Dr. King. Where were the UUs during Rev. Dr. King's push for Black civil rights? And what lessons can our justice efforts today take from that unique history? Rev. Sally Fritsche will lead us in reflecting on historical moments of connection and mutual support between Dr. King and UU communities, as well as missed opportunities we can still learn from. Together we will sing, pray, and meditate deeply on the ongoing impact of our shared histories.
