Traditional Lands and Waters: A Treaty Workshop
UCM is located on the Treaty Lands and Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit. We honour their legacy of caring for this land and seek a relationship of mutual respect.
Our Guest speaker from MNCFC was Margaret Sault, she gave a breakdown of each major interaction over the years with the federal government in terms of treaties. She had a time line Power Point display of each treaty and was able to show us what went on behind the scenes at each one, other than the bare bones statements of the treaties themselves.
She was very funny at times in describing the antics and shenanigans the government got up to too circumvent previous government agreements, as well as ongoing ones.
The government were very sticky about the details of a transaction from MNCFN, but had no qualms about some times moving the goal posts if they thought they could get away with it. The webpage www.mncfn.ca under Culture and History, has a map which expands into multiple maps and descriptions of treaty lands .
Margaret gave us a picture of Rev. Peter Jones, chief of the MNCFN who played an important role in working with the government in the 1800’s
We will order paper copies of booklets about the MNCFN and their treaty lands, and we will have those available in a few weeks in the foyer. The website for Mississaugas of the Credit is www.mncfn.ca
