Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser Afghan Family Sponsorship
Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser Afghan Family Sponsorship
We are pleased to be hosting another Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser for the Afghani family of six that UCM is sponsoring! We are very excited that the family has now been accepted to come to Canada and will probably be arriving in the next few months! We are fundraising with delicious pancakes, berries and outdoor games at Janis' expansive, enchanting backyard. Tickets are $30 for adults and free for children under 12. Tickets have to be purchased by Tuesday, September 5th so we know how much food to buy. Everyone will gather at the UCM Great Hall parking lot at 84 South Service Rd. (near Hurontario and and the QEW) at 9:45am, Saturday, September 9th. We will carpool you to Janis’ place, a 5 minute drive away. In case of rain, the event will be inside at the Great Hall. UCM member Sally met the father of this family while doing international volunteer work. The father ran an informal cafe to bridge cultural divides and soothe tensions between groups in a refugee camp. He returned to Afghanistan several years ago to care for his ill father. After returning to Afghanistan, he was employed by the previous Afghan government, which has made him and his family a target since the Taliban takeover in August 2021. You can purchase tickets by transferring funds to Cathy Tafler at cathytafler@gmail.com or on eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/pancake-breakfast-fundraiser-afghan-family-refugee-sponsorship-tickets-694431101117?aff=oddtdtcreator Thank you for your support!

Sunday Service: Ingathering and Water Ceremony
Sunday Service: Ingathering and Water Ceremony
Everywhere around the world, waters move—trickling, gushing, rising, falling. Once more, the people of UCM rise and return from summer lives, eager to re-commit as a community inspired to deepen, nurture, and act. This is an All-generation Service, with activities for our youngers organized by Family Life Coordinator Caitlyn Seale and music to move and engage from Music Director Abigail Freeman. Bring some water with you to add to our common bowl, part of our ritual enacting our shared life together. Colleen Goode and Wendy Shusterman serve as Service Leaders, with Interim Minister the Rev. Rita Capezzi officiating. YouTube The YouTube livestream of the Service will be available to subscribers to the UCM channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCD8jh9eDfIPsl51oMKSpqPw?view_as=subscriber To subscribe, find the Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga on YouTube, and hit the subscribe button. Sunday Service: International Day of Peace
Sunday Service: International Day of Peace
As a Unitarian Universalist congregation, we affirm and promote the 6th Principle: The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all. Through this All-Generation service, we explore how peace, both internal and in the larger world, is bound tightly with liberty and justice. We will celebrate peace by re-dedicating the Congregation’s Peace Pole as a way of co-creating peace in our time. With Service Leader Tammy Christiansen and Rev. Rita officiating. Amnesty International Letter Campaign
Amnesty International Letter Campaign
Our Amnesty International group has selected letters to three countries that we have not addressed in past letter campaigns: Azerbaijan, Vietnam, and Yemen. The Azerbaijan letter is supporting the right of freedom of speech of an opposition critic who has been jailed despite peaceful activities. The Vietnam case is urging a stay of execution for a man whose murder conviction was tainted by torture, intimidation of witnesses, and incomplete evidence. The Yemen letter is addressed to both a Huthi rebel leader and the government of Yemen asking for an end to persecution of the Bahai' religious minority, as a step towards peaceful co-existence in general in that country. Please read the letters in the lobby and sign them if you would like to show support. We will have three cups for much-appreciated postage donations. John Rowell, Chair, UCM Amnesty International group

Sunday Service: Getting to Know Us
Sunday Service: Getting to Know Us
UCM remains in a time of transition, with ministerial changes, leadership changes, and newcomers learning about this community. At this service, we’ll explore how we might know ourselves more deeply and expansively. We’ll consider how self-knowledge opens us to greater curiosity about each other and the unique role we each fulfill in the world. With Service Leader Charlotte Ferworn and Rev. Rita preaching.

Online – UCM Book Club: Molly of the Mall: Literary Lass and Purveyor of Fine Footwear
Online – UCM Book Club: Molly of the Mall: Literary Lass and Purveyor of Fine Footwear
After reading The Rose Code and The Splendid and the Vile - both very good books set in WWII, it was decided by consensus, that a humourous book would be our pick for summer reading. Molly of the Mall: Literary Lass and Purveyor of Fine Footwear, by Heidi L. M. Jacobs, won the Stephen Leacock Award for 2020. Molly is a delightfully whimsical protagonist. Always informed by the characters from literature she loves, she approaches life in her own unique, and fanciful, way. Such fun to follow the retail nightmares and romantic comedy mishaps of this Austenian heroine of mid-90s in Edmonton. The story captures the malaise and pretension of every undergraduate English course ever. Molly is wicked good fun. We keep a list of possible books to read in the future. All our books are decided by consensus and the list is constantly evolving. If you would like to know more or to see our current list, please email Beverly beverlzcarr@gmail.com Mark your calendars for the afternoon of Tuesday, September 26, and join us!
