Sunday Service: Taking Smart Risks

Each February we spend some time celebrating the good work of Unitarian Universalists across Canada in a Sharing our Faith Sunday. This week, we are fortunate to have Tanya Cothran from First Unitarian in Toronto joining us to share stories from her recent book “Smart Risks”, about her work in Africa with grassroots organizations, reflecting on the way this faith has influenced her choices. Tanya sits on the board of our national denomination, the Canadian Unitarian Council (C.U.C.). I’m delighted that she will be joining us on this special Sunday. We will hold a special collection to raise funds for the C.U.C. Sharing our Faith grant program.

Tanya Cothran is the editor of “Smart Risks: How small grants are helping to solve some of the world’s biggest problems,” which explores how building trusting, long-term relationships with effective grassroots leaders, organizations, and movements has a lasting impact. Tanya says “For me, the work is… about creating understanding, learning to listen, examining assumptions. These “smart risks” are a manifestation of the integrated web of people, working for more love and justice in the world.”   On this Sharing our Faith Sunday, Tanya considers the intersection between her work and her faith.  Tanya is a member of First Toronto and currently sits on the Canadian Unitarian Council board of trustees.

We have a full weekend of activities: I will see some of you tomorrow night at Solel’s annual neighbour service, some of you Saturday at our annual Seedy Saturday event, and I look forward, as ever, to seeing you Sunday morning.

There will be a special collection for the Sharing our Faith fund of the Canadian Unitarian Council.
